Just outside of Green Arrow Estates is the island's forge. I've used it a lot to make different practice weapons all these months of what seems like self-exile. It's been days since the jukebox recited our futures to us in Percy's voice, but it still seems like news to me. I haven't quite absorbed it all yet.

Percy and I told each other we should be friends now. It's so strange looking him in the eye and, for once, he knows everything and we're on the same side again. That is, if there really are 'sides' anymore. I guess that's the point of this ceremony thing. Percy suggested that we melt down Riptide and Backbiter, and I agreed. The two of us have used these weapons to fight each other. I thought the idea over, wondering why Percy suggested it, and I guess melting our swords down will be like melting the war back home down.

We considered inviting others, but in the end we decided to just do this thing together, just us. I'm looking forward to it. I genuinely want to reconnect with Percy. After hearing what he's going to do for me, I'm convinced I owe him more than just my life. Sweat is dripping off me as I work the bellows. I want to stoke the forge pretty hot for this. Percy's right near me, and I break the moment of silence.

"Percy. You don't have to melt Riptide. Backbiter is tied to Kronos, and tied to my betrayal. You've always stayed true, and fought for what's right. We could just throw in Backbiter."

Gods, I'm going to miss that sword. The sword is legendary. As Kronos's scythe, it cleaved one of the original immortals, Ouranos the sky, and brought forth the pantheon of the Titans. It created Aphrodite. It was a sign of my prestige. I've never fought with a better blade, and I doubt I ever will again. A large part of me wants to keep this sword, but, like I said, it's tied to Kronos and my betrayal. I have to melt it down like Percy suggested. I'll get by with a regular old sword.

I'd carried Riptide to the forge with some ceremony. A part of me couldn't believe that I was doing this: destroying my father's sword. But when Luke offered me a chance to back up, I looked at him, and found that I couldn't.

I shook my head. "No," I said. "It has to be both swords. It's not about what stayed true, it's about the war out there." I nodded over my shoulder, but I was sure Luke knew what I meant. "I promised Coraline on the River Styx that I'd do everything in my power to keep you here, but I think we both know what's going to happen anyway. We're going to go back, and the Fates are going to put us at war. But that's back home. Here and now, the war doesn't touch us."

I held out the sword and touched the tip to the edge of the forge. "Not as long as we're here."

When Percy decides to go ahead and melt Riptide because of the war, I nod. This whole war was thrust on him when he was too young, even by demigod standards. I understand. When he tells me about his oath, I look surprised.

"Percy!"

I find myself concerned for him, which is pretty different. I'm also surprised Percy's feelings about me have changed so drastically.

"No more oaths on account of me, alright? Especially on the River Styx... you'll find out why once you dive into it. It's not exactly a fun experience."

In my eyes, I owe him, not the other way around.

"Well, this was Coraline we're talking about," I said, grinning ruefully. "You think I'd have been able to get away with anything less?"

I'm speaking lightly, but I'm not taking this lightly. I know what oaths on the River Styx means. And Coraline knows I know. That's why she made me do it. But I was taking the oath seriously. I would do everything in my power, even if, in the end, that wouldn't be enough.

"Anyway," I added. "I'll jump in that river when I get to it. Hopefully, for the both of us, it won't be for a good long time."

I shake my head slightly as I work the bellows some more. What's he going to do? Tie me down? I guess that's why he was okay making the oath since there's not much he can do. If I just disappear, he can't really be held liable, because there's nothing he could've done.

"Alright, I think it's hot enough. I don't know exactly what you had in mind, Percy, but I was thinking of each of us saying something then putting our sword in."

I nodded, then looked at the red-hot forge. I pulled up Riptide and rested its tip on the edge. I thought a moment about what to say.

"I'll miss you," I said at last. "I wouldn't dream of doing this back home. But this is about the war, and the war has no place here. Not anymore."

I looked up at Luke, waiting to see if it was his turn to do the same with Backbiter, or if I should just push it in.

It's not like we had anything grand and formal planned. A small private thing where we say a few short words is perfect. I rest Backbiter next to Riptide.

"I'm no longer a servant of Kronos. This sword is a symbol of my betrayal of the gods, and a symbol of the might of Kronos. There's no longer a place for this it on Tabula Rasa."

I give Percy a nod before shoving the sword in.

I gave Luke a nod, and shoved in Riptide after Backbiter. A pocket of gas inside the forge must have ignited, because the fire flared up then, licking at the edges of the forge. Likely just a coincidence, but still very theatrical.

"There. Friends for real this time."

I give Percy a pat on his shoulder before going back to the bellows. I keep the forge hot as the swords start to lose their shape. I can't even imagine what Kronos's reaction would be to this.
